Gerrit's Journal

12/3

We learned about our wiki's and started them. We went home to do our timelines, I got home at 7 o'clock, tired from swim practice. I was pretty confused about what to put in the journal, but I think I did a pretty good job. Our timeline is kind of demanding so I hope I can manage my time enough, with swim practice. Today i had planned to  have four sources but it is hard to find four good sources.

I feel kind of overwhelmed at the amount of work we have to do for this project but i can make it fun. Im a little bit worried at Andrews work ethic, i told him though that in order to be my partner he had to work.

I felt sort of overwhelmed by the amount of work that was to be done by Christmas break. But after I calmed down I learned that I will learn to deal with the workload in biology. Tonight I am supposed to start our research, I hope I get an A. I can't seem to find any scientific classifications of our bacteria, but thank goodness our grade isn't just based on that info.

I think if we can find other, more interesting info, then we can still get an A. The more research i get, the more interested i get in our bacteria, its a bacteria that eats oil, thats pretty cool. I searched more for things our bacteria.

Today we learned from ms. jansen how to search the free web and evaluate the websites we find. I'm getting on a little late tonight but i'll still do some good work. I have a swim meat on friday, so i don't know how well i'll work friday night. it's hard finding information about our bacteria but ill still keep looking.

Today in class we worked on our project so i dont have to do as much tonight. I found a cool game to put on our site, it doesn't have much to do with oil-eating bacteria though.

12/7

I woke up today at 4:30 because i had to go to a swim meat in San Antonio, it was fun but i got home very tired. I still cant find much info about our bacteria, but i still keep looking.

Today i was pretty busy because we had to pick up my grandparents at the airport and we had to run some errands. It was hard to find time to work on my project but i still do it. Today i did even more research for our project and i think that i am starting to find some good stuff.

12/9

I was very busy today, we went to church, saw my brother at work, shopped at whole foods, and we had a huge family dinner where we decorated the Christmas tree. Im starting to work at about 9:00.

Today i learned that our journals have to be at least two paragraphs long so i will have to work on that. I find our bacteria so interesting because it was used in a real life danger situation. Our bacteria was used in the Exxon Valdez oil spill. I have just created a new page about oil spills and how oil-eating bacteria can help. I still have yet to find the scientific classifications of our bacteria and info just pertaining to our bacteria.

I didn't do much research today, partly because i just did that entire page. i still have yet to see Andrew's journal entrys and his notes from his research, i wonder if i should try to email his mom to find out if he is doing his homework. I am still kind of disappointed at where we are at right now in the project, but i have heard that from everyone.

Today we had the whole class to work on our project. Andrew and i searched for animations and pictures of our bacteria. I found a perfect pdf to put on our website but i cant copy and paste the diagram of how our bacteria function, it was a diagram of how the bacteria works as an enzyme that breaks down the oil into water and CO2. This diagram was perfect, but i got so frustrated.

I just linked the pdf to the page, its pretty interesting, but if it was on our website i think people would be more interested in reading it. Im also interested in peoples subconscience, what makes them interested in reading things on our page. I have tried to make our pages more interesting by putting pictures and different colors, not that we are stupid by being attracted to colors and shapes, but it does make things more fun.

We did our bacteria confirmation lab today in class, i was so excited about the info i found about the pre-lab. I found some good info on wikipedia, im used to it being an unreliable source, but this stuff was updated almost daily by p.h.d.'s and doctors. Our lab went pretty well, i got sort of frustrated by my lab partners, but on reflection i see i was being impatient. I found this lab to be pretty interesting. This unit in biology is so much more interesting than what we were doing before, with the cells and everything.

I am getting pretty excited about this project. Today Andrew found some really good material on oil spills and sceptic shock. Tonight i was supposed to work on my bibliography, but i can't get the library website to work, it won't load. So, instead i worked on making the articles that Andrew found more appealing. I found some pictures of oil and enzymes to put on the oil page, but the pictures of sceptic shock were way to devastating and depressing to put on our website.

12/13

Today in class we finished up our Bacteria Confirmation lab, it was a pretty difficult lab in that you need experience to be able to do it. We still had fun doing it though. The first day i didn't like my group because they seemed kind of helpless, but today they did really well. I had to redo the E. Coli stain because i messed up. Now i had to go home and work on the lab report. So, thats exactly what i did when i got home, i barely had any time to work on the wiki because i was too busy working on my lab report which is due by the end of class today.

I am getting sort of nervous about Sunday because thats when we turn in our  wiki, i wonder if we have enough information on our site because i sure doesn't seem that way. Im going to email Shaun Duggan our site so he can look at it, he has oil eating bacteria as well. I says that he has found a lot of info about our bacteria, so i wonder if i could look at his too.

In class today she told us about how we are going to turn in our project and what she expects, she posted the rubric on the website and i have to make an audience evaluation sheet, i need to be in contact with andrew about that because we only need one and i was wondering if i could do it. For the last 20 minutes of class today she let us work on our lab reports due at the end of class.

I just barely finished at the end of class, but then i went to email it to myself so i could print it out on one of the library printers, when i checked my email on one of the computers, the report was all messed up, it was in Turkish. So i tried for a couple of minutes to get that to work, but i decided that i needed to go to English class.

12/15

Today was pretty stressful, i have to turn this in tommorow and i don't feel like i have enough information. Also, my grandma wants to make cookies so i have been working on this on and off today. Working on bibliography and making the things andrew puts on here more appealing. I want to make the audience observation sheet. This has been interesting but i think i want it to be overwith. Also, i have to do my website evaluations and my personal evaluation, and my audience evaluation. Its going to be a busy day.

Tonight was a little tense at my house but after making cookies for about four hours, i finally got to work on my project. I worked for four and a half hours straight on my project. I changed the home page. I created a whole new page called the commoner's guide to bioremediation, its a site where anyone can learn about the basics of bioremediation. Also, i made a power point about our website, its just a short slideshow of pictures. Tomorrow i will have to work on the self evaluations, the website evaluations, and the audience evaluations.
